What’s going on?
Hitsville: The Making Of Motown chronicles the astronomical success and enduring cultural impact of Motown Records, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in September.
The remarkable story of the legendary Motown Records is told through behind-the-scenes footage unearthed from Motown’s vaults, rare performance footage and new and exclusive interviews with the label’s visionary founder, Berry Gordy and many of its superstar artists and creative figures.
We wanted to convey the ‘behind the scenes’ nature of the film and so opted to use this fantastic image of the Four Tops rehearsing at Hitsville. However, we wanted to help contemporise the poster and so we removed them from the recording studio and placed them centrally onto the iconic Motown logo, as if they were born from it.
Working with nothing.
We were asked to create a series of postcards that were to be used in cinemas across the country to promote the release of the film.
Because of complicated image licensing rights we were not able to use any photography, so instead we illustrated each artist without giving away too much of their likeness to create a series of unique, and stand out, postcards.
